The first stage of this existing beach farm residence was about slowing down the pace of living in a cosy retreat on the wild Flinders coastline. Our Melbourne and LA-based clients sought a refuge to come together, run amok and indulge their favourite pastimes. This beautiful weekender was created for conscious connection with family and friends, and also for exploration and adventure.

The sublime plot of land deserved to be in the design’s spotlight, especially given the brief to create a place where children could run free and enjoy nature at its finest. Summer swimming in a salty pool, views across the acreage – there they go, zooming on quad bikes over rolling hills, zipping down the flying fox. A freestanding studio fosters the work of grandmother, an accomplished artist; vegetables and herbs for the table are cultivated in the garden; yabbies are plucked from the dam for lunch.
The family’s love of horses was a key point of inspiration. You’ll notice many equine references throughout, a sweet recurring motif. Expect to see stables when you come back down the track – they’re happening in the next stage. The views, of course, are also hero in this design. The living areas and master suite drink them up, with motorised curtains peeling back to reveal an extraordinary seaside-meets-countryside vista.
The finished home responds to the fresh, calm and cosy feeling found in such an evocative landscape. We highlighted the site context with a white canvas and farm-style detailing, such as reclaimed timber, rich tan leather, industrial hardware and grey limestone. The stone forms a favourite feature, a French fireplace. Try saying that quickly three times.
The whole property serves a treasured ritual: the weekend family getaways. With country living, daily expectations, work timelines and the relentless pulse of the city’s demands just fade away. Our clients can simply enjoy being gathered together, looking out to the ocean and sitting around a firepit specially selected for toasting marshmallows. It’s real and raw, present and pure.
“Thank you for all that you have done for our family. You have been an absolute pleasure to deal with, so I don’t think this will be the last project!”
